Pinch-hitting, Tim McCarver came through with a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Phillies to a 5-3 victory over the Giants, who suffered their fourth straight defeat. The Giants jumped off to a 3-0 lead before the Phillies picked up a run in the sixth on a double by Larry Bowa, single by Terry Harmon and sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez.

Bowa walked in the eighth and scored from second with two out on a single by Deron Johnson. McCarver then batted for Joe Lis and hit his homer to send the Phillies ahead. Bowa plated an insurance run with a single in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
