Homers by Willie Stargell, Al Oliver and Bob Robertson helped the Pirates defeat the Cubs, 11-6, in a slugfest marked by 11 extra-base hits. Stargell's homer with a man on base came in the first inning when the Pirates scored three runs.

The Cubs picked up a pair in their half and then crammed a single by Paul Popovich, a homer by Billy Williams, doubles by Ron Santo and Joe Pepitone and triple by Brock Davis for four runs in the third. The Pirates cut the deficit with two runs in the fourth and went ahead to stay in the fifth when Roberto Clemente doubled, Stargell singled and Oliver and Robertson homered in succession.
