Swinging into the teeth of a 20-mile wind, Joe Pepitone smashed a homer with two out in the 12th inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Ken Holtzman, who worked the route for the Cubs, allowed nine hits, but did not issue a pass and struck out 12.

Pepitone's homer came off Mudcat Grant, who took over in the eighth in relief of Jim Nelson and gave up only one hit in 4 2/3 innings before Pepitone ended the game. [The Sporting News]
