The Mets got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 6-4. Ed Kranepool accounted for the first two tallies with a bases-loaded single and the third run counted when Art Shamsky grounded into a double play. Shamsky homered in the third.

Gary Gentry singled to drive in a run in the fifth and Jerry Grote, who broke out of his slump with three hits, singled for the Mets' final tally in the seventh. Gentry failed to finish, giving way in the eighth to Danny Frisella, who yielded four straight hits before checking the Padres' rally. [The Sporting News]
