A defensive move by the Angels paid unexpected dividends when Tony Gonzalez drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Billy Cowan, who started in left field and hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Angels a 3-1 lead, left the game in favor of Gonzalez in the eighth.

The Yankees rallied to tie the score in the ninth, but in the Angels' half, Gonzalez rapped a single with two out to score Ken Berry with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
