Rallying for four runs in the eighth inning, the Mets defeated the Padres, 4-2, and moved into first place in the East division by 12 percentage points over the Cardinals. A homer by Nate Colbert in the second inning and three singles in the fourth gave the Padres a 2-0 lead against Tom Seaver.

However, in the eighth, a single by Jerry Grote and triples by Don Hahn and Bud Harrelson tied the score. After an intentional pass to Ken Boswell, Ken Singleton singled to send the Mets in front. Walks to Art Shamsky and Bob Aspromonte then forced in the final marker. [The Sporting News]
