Steve Blass survived a bases-loaded, none-out threat in the sixth inning and pitched the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals. Bob Robertson homered for the Pirates in the fifth and their two other runs counted in the sixth on a single by Roberto Clemente, pass to Willie Stargell, single by Manny Sanguillen and an error by Lou Brock, who let Sanguillen's hit get away from him in left field. In the sixth, after the Cardinals loaded the bases on singles by Jerry Reuss, Brock and Matty Alou, Ted Simmons hit a sacrifice fly, but Blass retired Joe Torre and Jose Cardenal on popups.
