The Cardinals twice passed Gene Alley intentionally to get at Dock Ellis, but the Pittsburgh pitcher singled on both occasions, driving in the Pirates' first three runs in an 11-4 victory. Ellis' first single with the bases loaded produced two runs in the second inning.

An infield hit, again with the sacks jammed, resulted in his third RBI in the fourth and the Pirates went on from there to score three more runs. Willie Stargell homered in the seventh and the Pirates added four runs in the ninth to ice the victory, moving them into first place in the East division. [The Sporting News]
