. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Ken Holtzman was foiled in his bid for a third consecutive shutout in starting roles, but the Cubs' lefthander gained credit for a 5-2 victory over the Reds with relief help from Ron Tompkins. Holtzman also hit one of the Cubs' three homers in the game, the others coming off the bats of Don Kessinger and Ron Santo.

Holtzman allowed only one hit until the seventh when Johnny Bench homered. After Tony Perez doubled and George Foster walked with one away, Tompkins took over. Hal McRae singled to load the bases, but Ty Cline and Al Ferrara popped up. The Reds filled the sacks again in the eighth, but Tompkins escaped with only one run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Perez.
