. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Phillies, who were handed three unearned runs in the first inning, used them to defeat the Padres, 3-0, behind the pitching of Jim Bunning and Darrell Brandon. Steve Arlin, the Padres' loser, struck out Terry Harmon but the Phils' leadoff batter reached base on a passed ball by Bob Barton. Tim McCarver flied to left and Leron Lee, newly acquired from the Cardinals, dropped the ball. Willie Montanez singled to score Harmon. After Deron Johnson flied out, Oscar Gamble doubled to drive in McCarver and Montanez.

Harmon had a great day in the field for the Phils, handling 11 assists and seven putouts to set the modern major league record for most chances by a second baseman in one game. [The Sporting News]
