A five-run explosion in the ninth inning carried the Pirates to an 8-4 victory over the Cardinals, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. Dave Cash, Gene Clines and Roberto Clemente started the rally with singles, tying the score at 4-4.

Willie Stargell sent the Pirates ahead with a sacrifice fly. After a single by Manny Sanguillen, Richie Hebner smashed a three-run homer. [The Sporting News]
