Coming out of the bullpen, Phil Regan started a game for the first time since August 12, 1967, and gained the victory when Joe Pepitone homered for the Cubs with two men on base and two out in the eighth inning to beat the Braves, 3-2. Triples by Bob Didier and Felix Millan resulted in the Braves' run off Regan.

In the eighth, after Paul Popovich grounded out as a pinch-hitter for Regan, Don Kessinger walked and stopped at second on a single by Glenn Beckert. Billy Williams forced Beckert before Pepitone came to bat and hit his homer off Phil Niekro. [The Sporting News]
