A grand-slam homer by Bill Melton, plus solo swats by Rich McKinney and Mike Hershberger, carried the White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. Mike Kilkenny, pitching for the Tigers, allowed only two hits until the sixth when Walt Williams and Hershberger singled and Rick Reichardt was safe on an error to load the bases for Melton's smash. McKinney came up next and also homered. Hershberger previously had hit for the circuit in the fourth. Gates Brown, who tripled for the Tigers in the eighth, set an A. L. record for most pinch-hits in a career with 77. [The Sporting News] |
