Pete Rose's hustle prevented a double play in the first inning, and as a result the Reds scored the run that produced a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals behind the four-hit hurling of Don Gullett. Rose opened the game with a single off Al Santorini, making his first start for the Cardinals since being obtained from the Padres.

Hal McRae grounded to Dal Maxvill, but Rose beat the shortstop's throw to second, although the relay to first caught McRae. Lee May then singled, scoring Rose. [The Sporting News]
