After winning the first game behind Juan Marichal, 7-3, the Giants completed the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres by rallying for five runs in the ninth inning to take the second game, 10-9. Bobby Bonds had four hits, including a homer, for the Giants in the opener. Cito Gaston deprived Marichal of a shutout by hitting for the circuit with two men on base in the ninth. The Giants were leading the nightcap, 5-4, going into the final frame when the Padres exploded for five runs. Nate Colbert started the uprising with a bases-empty homer and, after the Padres loaded the bases, Bob Barton smashed a grand-slam off Jerry Johnson. In the Giants' half, Chris Speier doubled and Tito Fuentes, Bonds, Ken Henderson and Fran Healy singled, producing two runs and leaving the sacks loaded. Dick Dietz then doubled to clear the bases, the winning run scoring when Gaston bobbled the ball in center field. [The Sporting News] |
