The Cubs enjoyed their most profitable day at bat this season, getting 19 hits and thrashing the Cardinals, 15-5. Billy Williams, Jim Hickman, Ron Santo and Brock Davis each drove in three runs.

Milt Pappas, who had been sidelined by a virus infection, made his first start since June 7 and lasted 6 1/3 innings before being removed after serving gopher pitches to Joe Hague and Bob Burda. Phil Regan received credit for his first "save" of the season, although tagged for the Cardinals' last three runs on five hits in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
