After their first 10 batters went down in succession, the Braves erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to defeat the Reds, 9-3. Ralph Garr singled for the first of five hits off Ross Grimsley in the fourth.

The Braves kayoed the Reds' starter in the fifth and capped their scoring with a two-run homer by Marty Perez off Jim Merritt. The homer was the first of the rookie shortstop's major league career. [The Sporting News]
