The Braves scored only on a grand-slam homer by Earl Williams and lost a doubleheader to the Reds, 5-4 and 2-0. In the opener, Wayne Simpson made his first start for the Reds since being recalled from Indianapolis (American Association) and had a 3-0 lead going into the sixth when singles by Felix Millan and Mike Lum and a walk to Darrell Evans loaded the bases for Williams' slam. The Reds tied the score with doubles by Tommy Helms and Bernie Carbo in the eighth and won in the ninth. Lee May walked and gave way on the paths to Jimmy Stewart, who stole second and scored on a single by Johnny Bench. Don Gullett and Clay Carroll combined to pitch a shutout in the nightcap. Gullett was lifted after giving up singles by Ralph Garr and Hank Aaron with one out in the eighth inning. Carroll struck out the next two batters to quell the threat. The Reds' runs included the first homer by George Foster in a Cincinnati uniform. [The Sporting News] |
