Pitching in relief, Jim Merritt suffered his ninth straight defeat when Willie Montanez batted in two runs with a triple in the 12th inning to give the Phillies a 5-3 victory over the Reds.

Merritt, the Reds' fifth pitcher of the game, gave up a single by Larry Bowa to open the 12th. After a sacrifice by Tim McCarver and intentional pass to Deron Johnson, Montanez hit his triple off the luckless lefthander. [The Sporting News]
