The Dodgers spoiled Bob Gibson's return from the disabled list by defeating the Cardinals' ace, 4-0, behind the pitching of Bob O'Brien, who posted the first shutout of his major league career in his first start. O'Brien had one previous victory in relief.

The Dodgers scored initially in the first inning when Willie Crawford tripled and Willie Davis singled. A single by Crawford, double by Davis and single by Dick Allen added a pair in the sixth. After Gibson left the game, Davis homered off Rudy Arroyo for the last run in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
