After 22 relief appearances, John Cumberland drew his first start of the season and was a winner when the Giants defeated the Cubs, 2-0. Cumberland ran into trouble in the ninth inning, walking two batters with two out, but Jerry Johnson relieved and struck out Ramon Webster on three pitches to save the game.

Cumberland yielded three hits. Fergie Jenkins, who was the loser, allowed only two in seven innings of work. Passes to Hal Lanier in the sixth and Willie Mays in the seventh led to Giants' tallies. [The Sporting News]
