After rallying for five runs in the ninth inning to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-4, the Tigers succumbed to the pitching of Stan Bahnsen and lost the second game to the Yankees, 2-1. Les Cain, who started the opener for the Tigers, pitched hitless ball before a sore shoulder forced his departure after walking Gene Michael in the fifth inning. The Yankees proceeded to take a 3-2 lead. However, in the ninth, a single by Gates Brown and homer by Dick McAuliffe put the Tigers ahead and they added three more runs, after loading the bases, on an infield out by Al Kaline and single by Jim Price. Ron Woods homered in the Yankees' half.

In the nightcap, the Yankees scored both their runs in the first inning on a double by Jerry Kenney, single by Bobby Murcer, a stolen base and single by Jake Gibbs. The Tigers' run counted in the third on a single by Mickey Stanley, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Ed Brinkman. [The Sporting News]
