Roberto Clemente homered in the eighth inning for the 1,200th RBI of his career to give the Pirates a 10-9 victory in a split of a doubleheader with the Phillies, who won first game, 8-4. Willie Stargell hit his 28th homer to help the Pirates take a 4-3 lead in the lidlifter before the Phillies exploded for four runs in the seventh. Roger Freed led off with a homer to tie the score. After two walks, Denny Doyle doubled to drive in the leading tally and Willie Montanez doubled to add two more runs.

Deron Johnson hit two homers for the Phillies in the nightcap and Jose Pagan rapped a pair for the Pirates. Clemente's homer in the eighth as a pinch-hitter for Bob Veale broke a 9-9 tie. [The Sporting News]
