After Tommy Harper opened with a single, Romo retired Ron Theobald, but Dave May singled and Johnny Briggs walked to load the bases.

The White Sox failed to execute the forceout at second on a grounder by Rob Ellis, Harper scoring, and when Rich McKinney threw wildly to first, May also crossed the plate. The other runners advanced on the error and scored on a single by Roberto Pena, who took second on the throw to the plate and counted the fifth run of the frame on a single by Ellie Rodriguez.
