Tom Seaver struck out 13, going over the 1,000 mark for his career while pitching the Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Willie Montanez, who whiffed in the seventh inning, was Seaver's 1,000th victim. The Mets' ace then fanned four more.
