Don Carrithers, who had been recalled from Phoenix (Pacific Coast), turned in five fine innings of relief work and received credit for his first victory of the season when the Giants defeated the Padres, 6-4. The Giants were losing, 3-0, when Carrithers took over. The only run he allowed was on a homer by Nate Colbert. Willie Mays, who had failed to hit in 20 times at bat, broke his slump with a homer for the Giants' final run in the ninth inning. [The Sporting News]
