With 50,399 in stands, the Mets posted a 4-0 victory over the Pirates to move within two games of the Eastern division leaders. Nolan Ryan pitched the first seven innings and allowed six hits before tiring in the 90-degree heat. Danny Frisella gave up one hit in the last two frames.

Ed Kranepool homered off Steve Blass in the second inning and also contributed one of the Mets' four singles when they scored two runs in the sixth. Ryan tripled and Tommie Agee singled for the last tally in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
