An inside-the-park homer by Don Kessinger helped Cubs defeat the Pirates, 3-1. Kessinger walked in the first inning and scored on a single by Glenn Beckert and groundout by Billy Williams. Kessinger circled the bases in the third on a drive that got past Willie Stargell, who bounced off the left field wall and fell trying to make play.

Singles by Richie Hebner, Milt May and Gene Alley produced the Pirates' run in the seventh before the Cubs picked up their final tally in the eighth on singles by Beckert, Williams and Joe Pepitone. [The Sporting News]
