Roberto Clemente tripled in the sixth inning for the 2,800th hit of his career as the Pirates defeated the Reds, 5-2. After his triple, Clemente scored on a sacrifice fly by Richie Hebner to break a 1-1 tie. The Pirates tacked on three runs for their winning margin in the eighth. Al Oliver batted in two tallies with a triple and crossed the plate himself on a grounder by Manny Sanguillen. Dock Ellis gained his 12th straight victory, but the righthander was forced to quit the mound after seven innings because of a swelling shinbone resulting from being hit on the left leg by a batted ball earlier in the game.
