The Orioles smashed three homers in the first inning and cruised to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but a wild throw by Dick Hall in the seventh inning enabled the Senators to win the nightcap, 3-2. Don Buford, Brooks Robinson and Merv Rettenmund hit Orioles' homers in the first game, Brooks' blow coming after Frank Robinson was safe on an error.

In the nightcap, Lenny Randle singled for the Senators in the seventh, leading to the removal of Grant Jackson in favor of Hall. After a single by Dave Nelson sent Randle to third, Toby Harrah hit a chopper to Hall, whose throw to the plate hit the dirt and bounced past catcher Elrod Hendricks, allowing Randle to score.
