Bill Gilbreth, the Tigers' rookie southpaw, pitched his second complete game in three starts, allowed only three hits and beat the Yankees, 3-1. The Tigers reached Steve Kline for two runs in the first inning, one scoring on a double by Willie Horton.

Bill Freehan batted in another with a grounder and then accounted for the Tigers' last tally with a homer in the fourth. Thurman Munson hit for the circuit for the Yankees' run in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
