The Royals, who had lost to Mike Cuellar six straight times in the expansion club's existence, knocked out the ace lefthander in the third inning and defeated the Orioles, 7-1. The Royals scored four runs in their outburst in the third on singles by Freddie Patek, Paul Schaal and Amos Otis, a double by Cookie Rojas and sacrifice fly by Lou Piniella.
