Pitching before a crowd of 37,270 that sent the Cubs' attendance over the million mark, Fergie Jenkins turned in his 18th complete game of the season and beat the Mets, 4-2, for his 15th victory. The Cubs began their scoring in the second inning when Don Kessinger walked with the bases loaded.

Singles by Billy Williams and Ron Santo, around a pass, added a tally in the third. Williams drove in the Cubs' last two runs with a single in the fourth and double in the sixth. Tommie Agee and Ed Kranepool both homered in the sixth to account for the Mets' markers. [The Sporting News]
