The Pirates scored five unearned runs on two errors by Chris Speier and defeated the Giants, 11-7, in a meeting between the two division leaders. Four of the Pirates' tainted tallies counted in the fourth inning when they took a 6-4 lead.

The Giants pulled even in the fifth, but singles by Al Oliver and Manny Sanguillen, a walk, Speier's second error and an infield out produced two runs in the Pirates' half and sent them ahead to stay. Bob Veale was the winner in relief of Steve Blass, who was forced out of the game after being hit on the calf by a batted ball. [The Sporting News]
