Dick Dietz led off with a double and counted the first run on singles by Ken Henderson and Al Gallagher. Jimmy Rosario walked, but both Chris Speier and Tito Fuentes popped up, before Willie Mays drew a walk from Dave Giusti to force in the tying tally and bring up McCovey, whose slam was the 13th of his career.
