Pete Rose smashed a homer to tie the score in the eighth inning and the Reds then added another run without the benefit of a hit to defeat the Giants, 3-2. John Cumberland, who gave up Rose's rap, walked Hal McRae before being removed.

Don McMahon struck out Lee May but passed Tony Perez and Johnny Bench to load the bases. George Foster, formerly with the Giants, followed with a sacrifice fly for the winning run. [The Sporting News]
