Don Carrithers pitched a five-hitter and singled home two runs in the sixth inning when the Giants scored six times after two were out to defeat the Reds, 6-1. Willie McCovey started the Giants' outburst with a single and Dick Dietz walked. Ken Henderson doubled, scoring McCovey. Walks to Jimmy Rosario and Al Gallagher forced in Dietz.

Carrithers then hit his single to plate Henderson and Rosario and when George Foster threw wildly to the infield, Gallagher also crossed the plate. Carrithers reached third on the error and counted the last run on a wild pitch by Wayne Simpson. [The Sporting News]
