The Pirates built up a 4-0 lead and then withstood a ninth-inning rally by the Padres to emerge with a 4-3 victory. The Padres had been shut out three straight games and had failed to score in 37 consecutive innings before their rally.

Enzo Hernandez walked in the ninth and Leron Lee doubled to kayo Steve Blass. Dave Giusti retired Larry Stahl, but Nate Colbert hit a sacrifice fly to end the Padres' drouth. Ollie Brown followed with a two-run homer before Ed Spiezio grounded out. [The Sporting News]
