After battling 14 innings to win the first game, 8-7, the Cardinals had an easier time taking the second game, 9-3, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Expos. Joe Torre came out of the twinbill with five hits in seven trips, including two homers, and seven RBIs. He drew five walks, four intentional.

In the opener, the Cardinals won in the 14th on a single by Jose Cruz, sacrifice by Matty Alou and single by Ted Simmons following a pass to Torre. The Cardinals piled up six runs off Carl Morton in the first three innings of the nightcap and breezed to victory behind the four-hit hurling of Jerry Reuss. [The Sporting News]
