Utilityman Bobby Pfeil, pressed into service as a catcher because of injuries to Tim McCarver and Mike Ryan, hit the first two homers of his major league career to lead the Phillies to an 8-3 victory over the Astros in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader. However, the Phillies were silenced in the nightcap by Wade Blasingame, who yielded only four hits and pitched the Astros to a 5-1 victory, turning in his first complete game in 20 starts this season.

In addition to Pfeil's pair, Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson also homered for the Phillies in the first game. The Astros had circuit clouts by Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader to back Blasingame in the second game. [The Sporting News]
