With two out in the 12th inning, Bill Melton smashed a three-run homer to give the White Sox a 9-6 victory over the Yankees, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Melton's blow more than made up for the third baseman's error that permitted the Yankees to go ahead in the top half of the 12th, 6-5.

In the home half, Rich Morales walked, took second on a sacrifice and counted the tying run on a double by Pat Kelly. After Rick Reichardt grounded out, the Yankees walked Carlos May intentionally, but Melton wrecked the move with his homer. [The Sporting News]
