After Pat Dobson gained his 11th straight victory, winning the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0, Brooks Robinson stepped into the hero's role for the Orioles by smashing a two-run homer in the ninth inning to beat the Athletics in the nightcap, 6-4. Dobson gained his edge in a four-hit duel with Catfish Hunter when the Orioles scored in the fifth inning on a single by Merv Rettenmund, his theft of second and a double by Clay Dalrymple.

In the nightcap, Rettenmund singled to drive in two of the Orioles' four runs in the second inning. The A's rallied with the aid of a two-run single by Bert Campaneris to tie the score in the seventh. In the ninth, two were out when Boog Powell doubled and Robinson hit his winning homer.
