A four-run rally in the ninth inning that was capped when Fred Scherman was hit by a pitched ball with the bases loaded, enabled the Tigers to defeat the Royals, 10-9. Norm Cash hit a grand-slam homer for the Tigers in the fifth inning. Freddie Patek drove in four runs with a double and homer to help the Royals take a 9-6 lead before the Tigers came up for their last turn at bat.

Singles by Gates Brown and Al Kaline with one out started the Tigers' comeback. Ted Abernathy, replacing Roger Nelson, walked Willie Horton to load the bases and then struck out Bill Freehan. Tom Burgmeier, brought in to face Cash, hit him with a pitch to force a run home. Jim Northrup singled, driving in two runs to tie the score. Dick McAuliffe walked to reload the bases. Scherman was next batter and manager Billy Martin let his relief pitcher go to the plate.
