Bob Gibson smashed a homer to provide his own winning run while pitching the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Phillies in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The second game was rained out. Gibson's round-tripper in the seventh inning, following a circuit clout by Jose Cruz, put the Cardinals ahead, 4-1, and enabled Gibson to survive a two-run rally by the Phillies in the ninth.
