Juan Pizarro, making only his third start for the Cubs since his recall from Tacoma (Pacific Coast) early in July, defeated the Mets, 3-2, and turned in his first complete game since July 4, 1969, when the lefthander was with the Indians.

The Cubs pinned the defeat on Tom Seaver, counting two runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Glenn Beckert, single by Billy Williams, a hit batsman, infield hit by Jim Hickman and a forceout by Paul Popovich. However, Danny Frisella allowed what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth on a walk to Williams, single by Hickman and a wild pitch. [The Sporting News]
