A barrage of seven hits for six runs in the first inning started the Twins off to a 10-7 victory over the Yankees. Cesar Tovar, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Rich Reese singled in succession for two runs, Leo Cardenas doubled for two more, another scored on a groundout by Jim Holt and the sixth run crossed the plate on a single by Phil Roof.

As events turned out, that would not have been enough, but the Twins added two runs in the fourth on a homer by Oliva, double by Reese and single by Leo Cardenas before winding up with a pair in the fourth.
