After giving up a homer by Cito Gaston in the first inning, Steve Carlton bore down the rest of the way and pitched the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. The Cards tied the score in the second on a triple by Joe Torre and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons.

Matty Alou doubled in the fourth, stopped at third on a single by Simmons and counted the go-ahead run when Jim Beauchamp forced Simmons. A single by Lou Brock, his 36th stolen base of the season and single by Alou added the final run in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
