The loser of four straight decisions in July, Bill Hands pitched the Cubs past the Astros, 5-0, for his first victory since June 29. Ron Santo, breaking an 0-12 slump, smashed a homer in the second inning to pin the defeat on Larry Dierker, who allowed only two other hits before leaving the game for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. The Cubs fell on reliever Fred Gladding for their remaining runs in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
