A three-run homer by Tony Perez in the sixth inning paced the Reds to a 5-2 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Mets came back to win the second game, 9-4. The Reds, held to one hit by Nolan Ryan for the first five innings of the opener, erupted in the sixth and scored a run on a single by Pete Rose, pass to Bernie Carbo and single by Lee May before Perez pounded his homer. May added a homer in the eighth. The Mets pinned winless Jim Merritt with his 11th loss in the nightcap. Tim Foli drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. [The Sporting News] |
