Coming off the disabled list, Denny McLain gained his first victory since June 30 when the Senators rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Tigers, 4-2. Frank Howard homered in the third inning, but the Nats had only three other hits off Joe Niekro and trailed, 2-1, going into the ninth. Bernie Allen started the rally with a single and Tommy McCraw doubled. After Tom Timmerman replaced Niekro, Tim Cullen singled to score Allen. McCraw crossed the plate when Aurelio Rodriguez failed to handle a hot grounder by Jeff Burroughs. Fred Scherman took over for the Tigers and gave up a single by Dave Nelson, driving in Cullen.
